Visited by the Bishop
Submitted by johnhummel on Fri, 08/21/2009 - 21:54About a week ago Sunday, my wife came home from church. "The bishop said he'd like to talk to you," she said. "I don't know why."
I shrugged. "Phone's right there - he can call if he wants."
As you may have read before, my former church - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (aka LDS or Mormon church)- asked me if I would accept the offer to work on a Boy Scout committee. In reality, it was just about the least religious duty you could ask someone to perform in the LDS church.
Episode 29: Southern Baptist

Clearing a Misconception: Why I'm an Atheist (hint - it's not gay marriage)
Submitted by johnhummel on Sat, 08/15/2009 - 16:55After the St Petersburg Times article about "52 Weeks, 52 Religions with John Hummel, I received a few emails and comments that go something like this:
"Just because the Mormon church is against gay marriage doesn't seem like a reason to become an atheist."
I don't blame the article - I did leave the Latter Day Saint (aka Mormon) church over their behavior in the gay marriage debate. But I had been an atheist long before.

Blushy time again
Submitted by johnhummel on Wed, 08/12/2009 - 19:19I had a very nice conversation just a bit ago with a gentleman named David Stevens before The Creatures I Share The House With (aka - my children) were to have dessert. He had read the very flattering St Petersburg Times article written about me, and called Ms. Morales (the reporter who wrote the article) who passed along his number to me.
Mr. Stevens belongs to Bayside Community Church, and he gave me a gracious invite to visit him and his church for a bit. I'll have to see if I can work it into the schedule.
